Background
Marschall Runge has spent forty years in American medicine as a clinician, as head of a cardiovascular molecular biology laboratory, and as dean and chief executive of the University of Michigan Medical School and Michigan Medicine. His laboratory followed a single question for four decades, what makes blood vessels and the heart age, from NADPH oxidase and mitochondrial DNA damage in atherosclerosis to plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 in fibrosis and hypertension. He now leads a Michigan cohort pairing epigenetic aging clocks, mitochondrial inheritance, cardiorespiratory fitness, and chronic inflammation in one dataset.
