Background

Alex Kalinin earned a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan in 2018, working in the Athey Lab with Brian Athey and Ivo Dinov on deep learning for pharmacogenomics and for the three and four dimensional morphology of the cell nucleus. That work included shape modeling for nuclear morphological classification and a study of valproic acid induced changes in nuclear morphology in astrocytes. The collaboration continued through an international postdoctoral fellowship held jointly at the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data and the University of Michigan from 2019 to 2021, and then a position on the Imaging Platform at the Broad Institute. Kalinin is now a Senior Machine Learning Scientist in the Computational Imaging group at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, working on foundation models for virtual staining and image based profiling of cells.
